Xabi Alonso’s first goal for Bayern was genius

Xabi Alonso has been dazzling for Bayern Munich this season, bossing the midfield almost immediately since coming over from Real Madrid. He leads the Bundesliga in touches per game and broke the all-time records for most in one game with 204 touches against Cologne. He was similarly dominant on Saturday:

The one thing he hadn’t done yet was score, but that changed Saturday. Alonso opened his Bayern account in brilliant fashion, duping the Werder Bremen wall with a low free kick after two dummy runs by his teammates.

The goal put Bayern up 2-0 on struggling Werder. They would eventually win out 6-0.

Prost! Bayern Munich go on Oktoberfest visit

Fresh off their 4-0 win over Hannover on Saturday, Bayern Munich went on their traditional team trip to the Oktoberfest, and it was a jolly ol’ time.

The main takeaways: Xabi Alonso can pull off anything, Manuel Neuer is unsurprisingly the life of the party, and Claudio Pizarro still looks great.

Classic Neuer. Always venturing out of his area.

Another line of work: Real Madrid players try to play American football

Things that Xabi Alonso, Sergio Ramos, Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and the rest of Real Madrid are good at:

  • Shooting soccer balls
  • Passing soccer balls
  • Heading soccer balls
  • Running a lot

Unfortunately for the team, only one of those skills translates to American football, and it showed when they took the field in Michigan:

Not only did the boys toss the pigskin around a bit, they tried their hands at a few plays as well. It certainly wasn’t the prettiest athletic endeavor we’ve ever seen, but they look like they’re having a blast.

It’s the effort that counts, fellas.

Xabi Alonso takes us back to the 2010 World Cup final with odd photoshoot

Remember this? Of course you do.

You’re not going to believe this, but Spain’s Xabi Alonso, the victim of Nigel De Jong’s infamous kung-fu kick to the chest, does as well. In fact, he played off the lasting image of the 2010 World Cup final in a tongue-in-cheek photoshoot for adidas.

In the shoot, Alonso is seen wearing a chest bandage marked by De Jong’s bloody footprint. Gross.

Let’s hope the two sides take it a little easier in their Group B opener on Friday. After all, it’s just the group stage.

Chelsea eyes Roma’s De Rossi for summer switch

Roma midfielder Daniele de Rossi seems to have perennially been on the radar of Premier League clubs since breaking onto the scene in Italy and Serie A as a combative midfield destroyer. The man’s penchant for goals means that most clubs have been following his progress throughout his career, and rightfully so.

However, at 29-years-old, the Italian legend could finally be set to break out from the Roma ranks for the first time in his career. A one-club-man, de Rossi could well be tempted to join Jose Mourinho at Chelsea. If the Portuguese maestro gets his way that is, and de Rossi won’t come cheap!
