Defoe headed to the MLS, Mata to Madrid

Not content with shocking the world of soccer with the supposedly imminent signing of USA’s finest midfielder Michael Bradley, Major League Soccer outfit Toronto FC are closing in on a move for another international, this time England and Tottenham’s Jermain Defoe.

The striker has Premier League, World Cup and European experience, so should rip up the MLS if he joins. Elsewhere, unsettled Chelsea star Juan Mata is now on the radar for a return to Real Madrid, who he left as a youth star years ago. We think he’d fit right in.

You can read more on those two rumors, as well as many, many more, in a packed edition of Paper Chase.

#DempseyWatch Turns Into #BradleyWatch

By Kyle McCarthy

Former United States men’s international Taylor Twellman sparked hysteria on Twitter this afternoon with a brief, incredible dispatch about the future of Michael Bradley:

This move carries most of the hallmarks of Clint Dempsey’s stunning move to Seattle last summer with one catch: Bradley, 26, is in the prime of his career.

The thought of Bradley — perhaps the best player in a USA shirt at the moment — exchanging Serie A for MLS at this stage raises a whole host of questions. Most of them permeated through the Internet in the ensuing minutes as people tried to process why Bradley might spurn the chance to fight for his place at Roma or stay in Europe with another club.

Perhaps the most interesting dispatch came from Philadelphia Union defender Amobi Okugo:

Whether TFC and Bradley eventually complete the move remains uncertain at this point. One thing is clear about the present, though: #BradleyWatch has started in earnest.

Premier League giants Chelsea close on Guarin deal?

image

Chelsea appear to have been big admirers of Guarin for some time and it looks like they may finally be getting their man. The Stamford Bridge outfit don’t appear to be short on midfielders but with the Colombian’s instrumental performance in the Milan derby he could’ve just won over manager Jose Mourinho.

Pepe Reina seen telling Iker Casillas to leave Real Madrid?

What is it with Spanish keepers and transfer rumors.

The future of Barcelona shot-stopper Victor Valdes has been questioned for years now, with Liverpool’s on-loan no.1 Pepe Reina reported to be heading the other way into the Camp Nou.

Recent events have seen Iker Casillas seemingly edging closer to a move from Real Madrid soon enough, with coach Carlo Ancelotti continuing Jose Mourinho’s work of putting Diego Lopez between the sticks on match days.

This latest video could be further indication of Casillas’ unhappiness at the Bernabeu, too.

Warming up before Spain’s 2-1 victory over Belarus on Friday, back-up keepers Casillas and Reina were seen chatting, unbeknownst to them that the cameras were to pick up exactly what they were saying.

Indeed, unfortunately for them, Spanish TV channel Cuatro was amongst the media at the friendly and they’ve managed to secure a now translated lip-read conversation between the two, which went something like this:

Reina: How many could it be? 10? 12? (Games you’ll play this season)

Iker: Yeah, but in the end…. -

Reina: In the end, it’s a [expletive] season… Because in the end you’re going to play, at best, 10 or 12 Cup games.

Iker: ‘But to leave now…I can’t see that happening man… at least I’ll play the Cup.

Reina: The Cup! That’s embarrassing, shameful.

Credit to Casillas for wanting to remain loyal to Los Blancos, but would a transfer breathe fresh life into the career of one of the world’s best keepers?

It’s been a bad start to the season for Manchester United, but matters could be made a whole lot worse if one of the UK papers is to be believed. Right-back Rafael is reportedly thinking about returning to Brazil which would increase David Moyes’ already sizeable headache.

Evergreen Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo is out of contract at the end of the season and is free to talk to other clubs in January. Find out which ones by clicking here.

AC Milan confirms transfer deal for Mario Balotelli

Call it the end of era.

AC Milan confirmed a transfer deal for Manchester City’s mercurial striker Mario Balotelli. The 22-year-old will reportedly undergo a medical on Wednesday to finalize his move back to Serie A before signing his contract.

The move back to Serie A ends Balotelli’s turbulent tenure with the defending Premier League giants that has seen the Italian star dominate headlines for on and off-the field incidents with players, managers, teammates and fans.

Milan’s director Umberto Gandini confirmed the deal on Twitter explaining, “Transfer agreement for Balotelli signed with Manchester City. Medicals tomorrow in Milan, then personal terms until 2017 signing.”
