Ferdinand’s future under scrutiny again

Rio Ferdinand looks like he will be one of the casualties of Manchester United’s poor season in the Premier League, but fresh doubts over his future have emerged. The Sun claim the United defender was left out of a training camp in Dubai amid speculation he was about to retire, although the Mirror later contradicted the story by saying Ferdinand will be heading to the Middle East. We await developments…

Ferdinand offered chance to play in MLS

Rio Ferdinand’s injury problems mean he is unlikely to be offered a new contract by Manchester United when his deal expires at the end of the season. But that doesn’t mean it’s all over for the former England international because the 35-year-old defender has been offered the opportunity to play in MLS.

We’ve got the rumors on Manchester United’s transfer targets, plus the latest on Julian Draxler and much more. Just click here.

Uruguayan keeper retires after chopping off four of his fingers

imageUruguayan keeper Juan Obelar was forced to retire from football after a horrendous accident left him with only a thumb on his left hand. The 34-year-old chopped off four of his fingers while using a wood-cutting machine.

From the Daily Mail:

I feel so awful, this is the most horrendous thing that has ever happened to me. It is a very painful moment.

I was doing a few things for my house, putting wood through a plane and the next thing I know the machine ripped off four fingers.

I was on my own, I didn’t have help from anyone and the only digit I had left was my thumb.

Obelar, who last featured for Montevideo-based Penarol, had been out of a team and planned to attempt a comeback in January. Obviously, those plans have now been scrapped. Obelar said he will receive surgery to try to reconstruct his hand, but there is no way his fingers can be reattached. We hope you get well soon, Juan!

It’s not the first unusual domestic accident that has left soccer players on the sidelines, although none have been as horrific as Obelar’s.

Man United defender Rio Ferdinand once suffered a tendon strain by simply watching television, and Man City striker Sergio Aguero injured his foot last year while riding his son’s mini-motocross bike.  AC Milan legend Alessandro Nesta takes the cake, though. He once missed a month of action after needing surgery for rupturing tendons in his thumb. The reason? A marathon session on the PlayStation!

Ever since he helped out Cristiano Ronaldo with his sprinting technique when the Portuguese striker was at Manchester United, the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt, has expressed a wish to play for the Red Devils.

Some within the club even reciprocate his wish, with defender Rio Ferdinand leading the clamor for Bolt to pull on a red shirt and turn out for the Premier League champions.

Well finally, we and Rio are gonna get our wish!

That’s right. Usain Bolt will apparently take his place alongside United’s current greats in Rio’s testimonial against Sevilla on August 9.

It must have taken a lot for Rio to convince new boss David Moyes to sign Bolt up for one game only, but it will certainly put all eyes on Old Trafford to see whether Bolt’s soccer skills can match his sprint speed.

RvP and Rio Ferdinand ping pong battle for the ages

Believe it or not, Robin van Persie can do more than score incredible goals and terrorize Premier League defenders.

In a Manchester United “battle of the bats,” RVP takes on Rio Ferdinand in a very competitive game of ping pong, complete with entertaining commentary.

The Dutchman shows off some pretty solid skills, this is clearly not his first rodeo. He may have a promising future once he finishes this whole dominating the Premier League thing.

Man City sponsor congratulates United on title win - sort of.

When a few Manchester United players opened the door for City sponsor Etihad to poke a little fun at their expense, they took full advantage.

After United clinched their 20th top-flight title on Monday, some of the stars went out on the town to celebrate their victory that night. Several of the players, including Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, packed into a cab that was plastered in Manchester City blue and the Etihad logos to head to their night of partying. Talk about a kick in the gut to City.

But their quick-thinking sponsors turned this into a golden marketing opportunity. They took out a full page ad in the Manchester Evening News, using the photo and the caption “Congratulations Manchester United. You deserve to go home in style.”

The Red Devils will get the last laugh as they parade their Premier League trophy around Manchester on May 13th, but at least City fans will have smiles on their faces from this clever stunt.
