Porto in ‘crisis mode’ after 1st league loss at home in 5 years

image

Perennial Portuguese title favorites Porto lost their first home match in more than five years this Sunday, falling 1-0 to Estoril on a late penalty kick.

The result left the three-time defending champions in third place, only four points behind leaders Benfica. Still, the shame was apparently so great that after the match first-year coach Paulo Fonseca openly questioned his job status and fans went haywire in and outside the grounds.

Porto had previously gone 81 games unbeaten at the Dragao Stadium, last losing 3-2 to Leixoes in October of 2008.

After the upset, fans mercilessly jeered their players off the pitch, even waving “white flags” as if they forgot it was only February. Meanwhile, Fonseca gave a brief, somber sideline interview, saying he would now have to “talk to the President.” The grave mood continued outside the stadium, as angry fans and media members mobbed the players’ exit.

It’s already the second time this season that Porto — who just a year ago went undefeated in league play — found themselves with an unmitigated “disaster” on their hands.

In December, after the team lost for the first time in 53 league games — away to Academica — a throng of fans stopped the team bus as it arrived back in Porto. While chanting “Play some football,” the fans kicked, slapped and even threw flares at the vehicle:

Spoiled much? When one defeat sets off this kind of firestorm, maybe it’s time to reevaluate life.

Jonathan Soriano, Ricardo Quaresma score ridiculous golazos

Austria’s Salzburg delivered athe most stunning Europa League result on Thursday night, defeating Dutch champions Ajax 3-0 in Amsterdam. One of Salzburg’s many heroes on their historic night: Jonathan Soriano.

The 28-year-old Spanish striker scored a spectacular goal from the halfway line which caught Ajax goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen off guard. As a result, Soriano’s thunderous boom puts Salzburg in the driver’s seat in their two-legged Round of 32 affair.

Not to be outdone, Porto’s Ricardo Quaresma — once touted as Portugal’s next prodigy — reminded everyone why he earned stints (albeit very short stays) with Inter Milan and Chelsea through his mediocre career.

The former Barcelona flameout whipped a curling strike in off the far post from 20 yards out after beating Eintracht Frankfurt right back Sebastian Jung on the wing.

The goal was not enough, as Eintracht Frankfurt came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Porto. Quaresma’s curler, though, was truly mesmerizing:

The Hulks take over Instagram

Simply adorable.  This picture was posted to Zenit St Petersburg striker Hulk’s Instagram over the weekend, along with the caption:

"Besides the protection of God, also have two super heroes at home."

Apparently, the two were quite pumped up about daddy’s performances recently. In last week’s Champions League bout at his former club Porto, Hulk scored the match-winning goal after paying a visit to Porto’s new sculpture dedicated to him at the Estadio do Dragao stadium:

Age fraud? Monaco striker Radamel Falcao allegedly older than believed

image

Trouble in paradise?

Radamel Falcao was introduced at Monaco just three weeks ago, welcomed by a juicy contract and everything wonderful the French Riviera offers after completing a €60m move from Atletico Madrid. But before Monaco even begins their Ligue 1 campaign, their newly-prized asset is already at the center of a damning storm.

A recently published Colombian report questions whether or not “El Tigre” is truly 27 years old as documented by FIFA records, and not two years older as an old civil registration form would suggest.
