Gareth Bale issued speeding ticket for brilliant solo goal

The local police in Valencia have quite the sense of humor. After Gareth Bale score his absurdly amazing solo goal to give Real Madrid the Copa del Rey trophy, the cops issued him a fake but totally hilarious speeding ticket.

Well played, Valencia cops.

Not only that, but there’s some great humor in the details as well.

Iniesta ignores young pitch invader while she hugs him

We’re sure that Andres Iniesta normally loves the support of his fans, but when a young girl ran onto the field to hug her idol after Barcelona’s loss to Granada on Saturday, we can’t blame him for trying to brush her off.

Her timing was less than ideal: it was during a TV interview. After a loss. To a team that hasn’t defeated your club since 1972.

Come on, kiddo. Not cool.

You have to give her credit for her commitment to the hug. That girl has a death-grip on Iniesta’s waist. But was it worth the inevitable months of being grounded?

Ex-Valencia president arrested in plot to kidnap successor

image

Trouble with the law: Former Valencia president Juan Soler (R) was arrested on Wednesday.

Former Valencia president Juan Soler has been arrested in connection with an attempt to kidnap his successor at the club, Vicente Soriano.

According to multiple reports from Spain, Soler spent the night in prison after facing magistrates over his alleged involvement in the plot, but was released on bail.

Under the terms of his bail, Soler, 58, cannot leave Spain while the investigation continues and must go to court every two weeks. He has also been issued a restraining order forbidding him from coming with 15 meters of Soriano.

Soler and Soriano’s contentious relationship escalated in 2009, when Soriano purchased Soler’s shares with the Spanish Primera Division side. Claiming he was still owed money in the transaction, Soler then took Soriano to court.

In happier times: Vicente Soriano (L) purchased Juan Soler’s club shares in 2009.

Investigators believe the kidnapping plot, which Soler is suspected of hiring hit men to carry out, was an attempt to recover the funds in question. Police foiled the plot, however, and instructed Soriano to remain in his home.

Although both men are no longer associated with the Club — Amadeo Salvo is Valencia’s current president — it’s certainly a bizarre turn of events that we’ll be sure to monitor.

Barcelona fans unfurl FIFA-defying tifo

image

See that, Sepp Blatter? You don’t mess with Barcelona!

In response to FIFA handing the Catalan heavyweights a one-year transfer ban for violating international transfer rules regarding minors, the fans at the Camp Nou unfurled a giant, defiant tifo ahead of their match against Real Betis. It read: “La Masia No Es Toca,” or “La Masia is not to be touched.”

La Masia, of course, is Barcelona’s fabled youth academy that has been dragged in the mud a little bit as a result of the ban. Though FIFA will not bat an eyelash to this display, one thing it really can’t touch is the academy’s greatest ever product - Lionel Messi - who scored twice in a 3-1 win.

Javi Lopez, part-time goalkeeper?

What happens when your goalkeeper gets a red card and you don’t have any subs left? One the the most entertaining events in soccer: a field player hops in goal.

When Espanyol keeper Kiko Casilla was sent off against Barcelona in the 83rd minute, Javi Lopez stepped up to the challenge. He probably felt guilty for the penalty kick he gave up earlier in the match that gave Barcelona a 1-0 lead, and decided to take one for the team. Literally.

Usually, this field-player-in-goal scenario goes one of two ways.

1) Hilariously awful goalkeeping
2) Incredible save by someone who has no business doing it

Today, Lopez did the latter.

Cat-like reflexes. But, while Lopez’s impressive goalkeeping skills kept Barcelona from striking again, 10-man Espanyol couldn’t find the equalizer. Still, he can add this gem to his highlight reel.

Seydou Keita scores fastest goal in La Liga history

Other than recording a Vine video, 7.6 seconds is enough time to do… barely anything. Usain Bolt can’t sprint 100 meters in that time, nor can competitive eating champion Joey Chestnut eat even a single hot dog that fast (it takes him nine seconds).

However, that’s all the time Valencia’s Seydou Keita needed to score the fastest goal in La Liga history against Almeria.

Incredibly, Almeria was the side kicking off on Thursday night, but Keita profited from a truly terribly back-pass to the goalkeeper and pounced for the goal. With the strike, Keita beat out previous record-holder Joseba Llorente, who scored in 7.8 seconds for Valladolid in January 2008.

Not only was Keita’s goal the quickest ever in the Primera Division, it was also his first for the club. However, it wasn’t a perfect evening for the Mali international. Almeria woke up after the blitz attack and came back to earn a 2-2 draw.

Lionel Messi becomes Clasico’s all-time top scorer in Barcelona win

image

Lionel Messi scored a hat trick to lead Barcelona to a 4-3 win at Real Madrid on Sunday, becoming the rivalry’s all-time leading scorer with 21 goals in the process. Before his hatter, which included two penalties, Messi was tied with Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano on 18 goals. And if you’re wondering (you are), Cristiano Ronaldo also scored on Sunday and currently has 13 ‘Clasico’ goals.

Messi also passed Hugo Sanchez for second place in La Liga’s all-time scoring charts (he now has 235 goals) with the hat trick, and notched yet another historical first:

The goal that broke Di Stefano’s mark, Messi’s first of the day, was a classic Barcelona tiki-taka masterpiece. Watch it below:
