Matt Reis’ greatest save, revisited

Earlier this year, MLS Insider released the gripping story of how Matt Reis saved his father-in-law’s life during the Boston Marathon Bombings in April.

Reis, who recently announced his retirement and currently serves as the LA Galaxy’s goalkeeping coach, appeared on FOX Soccer Daily as a guest analyst on Friday, and reflected on his greatest save, also giving an update on his father-in-law’s condition.

Must-see to believe: Bicycle kick save in ice hockey

Who says the FOX Soccer Blog must strictly be 100% soccer-based?

Well, common sense, that’s who. But still, you have to check out this incredible save by Calgary Flames goaltender Reto Berra of the NHL.

This past Wednesday (so we’re a bit late, sue us), Berra pulled off one of the most stunning saves of the year, stopping a shot by Columbus Blue Jackets defender Jack Johnson with a bicycle kick, or as some hockey folks apparently call it “going around the world with the pads.”

Impressive stuff, hockey. But can you top René Higuita’s memorable scorpion kick save?

Keeper knocked unconscious after colliding with post

PSV goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton had to be put in a neck brace and taken off the pitch in an ambulance after an ugly collision with the goalpost in Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Roda.

While making a fantastic save on a free kick, Tyson’s head first crashed into the post before violently slapping off the ground, knocking him unconscious. Medical staff quickly moved in to stabilize his neck and transported him to a nearby hospital.

PSV was forced to play midfielder Ola Toivonen in net to see out the final three minutes, as the team had already used up all three substitutions, but that surely was the last of their worries at the moment. Thankfully, initial reports from the hospital say that Tyton will be okay.
