Ex-Fulham manager Felix Magath believes in cheese as injury cure?

image

Felix Magath’s reign at Fulham ended mercifully last week after leading the club to the bottom of the Championship table. And though the post-Magath era started with yet another loss over the weekend, you can still sense the giant wave of relief at Craven Cottage.

Since Wednesday, Magath has increasingly come under fire from former players who had fled Fulham after it became clear the German would stay despite not saving the club from relegation last season. Chief among them ex-captain Brede Hangeland, who according to Daniel Taylor’s column in the Guardian last week, was once told by Magath to treat a leg injury by - wait for it - rubbing a block of cheese onto the sore area!

Danny Murphy, a team-mate of Hangeland’s for almost five years and also a former Fulham captain, confirmed the bizarre story on the British Premier League review show “Match of the Day Extra.”

'I texted Brede to ask if it was true,' Murphy said, 'Brede told me it was, and that the cheese had to be soaked in alcohol, and that he was told to phone his mother because it would help to speak to someone who loves him while the cheese is working!'

'It's one of many ridiculous sad stories that we've heard about Felix that has ultimately cost him his job and put Fulham in a world of trouble because all the good and experienced players that were here were desperate to leave because of it and did,' Murphy said.

Woah.

Who knew alcohol-soaked cheese does not, in fact, heal leg injuries? You learn something new every day…

Ex-Fulham captain reveals that Clint Dempsey punched out a window

image

U.S. men’s national team fans are pretty familiar with Clint Dempsey’s passion for the game. But maybe they didn’t know how far the captain’s emotions could take him.

Fulham’s former captain Danny Murphy has some insight.

In a interview with talkSPORT, Murphy discussed a ‘horrible moment’ where Dempsey was so angry he punched through a glass window, tearing up his hand in the process.

According to Murphy, Dempsey was furious after being told he wouldn’t start the Europa League semi-final in 2010 just hours before the match.

He was being replaced by Bobby Zamora, who had been in doubt due to injury.

"Basically half his finger was off and you could see his tendon. Glass shattered - it was some punch by the way. Blood was going everywhere. This was all because he wanted to play of course," said Murphy.

After calming down, Dempsey was bandaged up and came on a substitute for Fulham’s 2-1 win over Hamburg.

But based on Murphy’s retelling, it was a scary moment he won’t soon forget.

Leighton Baines grabs a cold one after Everton knocks off Fulham

After handily taking down relegation-threatened Fulham on Saturday, Everton sit just four points shy of Arsenal for the coveted fourth Champions League spot.

With a game in a hand and a tie against the Gunners next week, things are looking up for Everton. So, what better way to celebrate than grabbing a nice cold one? That’s what Leighton Baines opted to do:image

Yep, apparently Baines made a pit stop outside of Craven Cottage to snag a bit of ice cream.

It just goes to show that you’re never too old to chase down the ice cream man.

Trecker’s Travels: London’s rare moment of brightness

image

LONDON

On Tuesday, the sun was out and underneath my flat window, Hollywood had broken out. A camera crew was at one end of Inverness Street, at the other stood a man I recognized from Doctor Who: James Corden.

For a moment, I thought Los Angeles might have followed me over here but then I realized that all the people crowded around him has been rounded up off the streets. Those were not extras playing schoolgirls, cops and street-sweepers — they were schoolgirls, cops and street-sweepers (London’s public worker rules must very liberal indeed). A good hour and a half went by while they rolled off shot after shot as I watched from above. Some of the cast started waving up to me and I waved back. A girl asked for a bottle of water, I chucked one down.

I won’t spoil the plot, but it is apparently part of a campaign for Cadbury over here, and might have a bit to do with the return of the cult-classic comedy “Gavin and Stacey.” I only know this because their social media team tweeted at me about it.

Deadline day falls apart because wife goes into labor

image

Swansea defender Neil Taylor could have taken a seat on Fulham’s bench today were it not for the birth of his second child!

Taylor was reportedly on the cusp of a move to the Cottagers ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline when his wife unexpectedly went into labor mid-afternoon. As if the workings of deadline day weren’t already complicated enough, this personal matter understandably scratched any hopes of sealing the deal.

Fulham were said to be desperate to sign the left back, tabling an offer of around $6.5 million. And Taylor, who has struggled to get minutes under Michael Laudrup since returning from a lengthy injury spell, would probably have welcomed a move to London as well. Alas, it looks like divine intervention was at play here.

Fulham set sights on former club star Clint Dempsey

image

With the winter transfer window just around the corner, clubs entrenched in relegation dogfights enter the market with wallets full of cash in a desperate attempt to snag the player needed to remain in top-flight football.

Case in point, Monday’s main rumbling comes straight from Craven Cottage as Premier League strugglers Fulham are reportedly setting their eye on a January loan move for Seattle Sounders forward Clint Dempsey. The current United States captain, who played for the Cottagers from 2007-12, signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the Major League Soccer club that allows him to leave on loan in the winter to prepare for next summer’s World Cup.

With Fulham currently sitting 19th in the Premier League table, a move for the 30-year-old would be a welcomed addition for newly-appointed manager René Meulensteen who is keen to beef up Fulham’s gun-shy attack.
