It’s been a long time! What happened since Arsenal last won a trophy…

imageArsenal’s trophy case has been collecting only dust for some time now.

Arsenal’s nine-year trophy drought is well documented, but do you really understand just how long it’s been?

A lot can happen in football over the course of nine years, more than you’ll remember. Thankfully, the wonderful people over at Football Daily put this video together to paint the complete picture.

The one nugget that stood out immediately? Since the Gunners last lifted a trophy — the 2005 FA Cup — there have been 29 different English sides that have won silverware. Twenty-nine.

Watch the video for more stats that will make Arsenal fans shudder:

Wenger’s airport fall a fitting end to Arsenal’s nightmarish day

image

Safe to say it wasn’t a good day for Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

Hours after watching his team get smacked around Anfield Road to the tune of a 5-1 loss, Wenger apparently slipped and fell at a Liverpool train station with two suitcases in tow. Luckily, according to The Mirror, a club spokesperson has said “he’s fine,” but someone did snap pictures of the whole thing happening, even though we don’t know who. It illustrates perfectly the kind of day Arsenal were having.

While Wenger took the fall, some of his players at least took responsibility for the dreadful performance against Liverpool:

Manchester United set to enter Kroos control

Just a couple of days remain before the January transfer window slams shut, and the rumor merry-go-round is certainly in full swing.

One of the main protagonists of this transfer window has been David Moyes’ Manchester United, following their early-season struggles. They don’t look likely to stop spending after snaring Juan Mata from rivals Chelsea, and now they’re looking at another world class midfielder.

Pep Guardiola has admitted that Toni Kroos can leave Bayern Munich, opening the door to a move to Old Trafford.

Also in today’s round-up, there’s news of an alleged Arsenal bid for Julian Draxler from Schalke. Read about it and more on today’s Paper Chase.

Arsene Wenger plays coy with media over Julian Draxler speculation

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice?

Last summer, Arsene Wenger stunned us all by breaking the bank for Mesut Ozil on transfer deadline day, after weeks of steadfastly denying that any deals were even in the works.

So we probably shouldn’t take Wenger at his word this time around. After Friday’s FA Cup win over Coventry City, the Gunners boss said there is “nothing at all” to report on Arsenal’s hotly rumored negotiations with Schalke regarding German international Julian Draxler.

Yeah, sure thing, Arsene. We “believe” you.

image

Come on, that’s as guilty a look as we’ve ever seen.

Draxler might indeed not come to Arsenal in this window, though the German starlet reportedly is very eager to do so. Schalke wouldn’t do themselves any favors by selling their best player while fighting for a Champions League spot next season, although they did the same with Lewis Holtby a year ago. At the very least, however, there must be something going on between the two clubs.

In fact, we’ve already seen reports that a fee has already been agreed upon for the 20-year-old, rumored to be between $50 to $60 million.

Gunners set to offer boss new deal?

image

According to the English newspaper Daily Star, Arsenal are set to offer manager Arsene Wenger a new contract. The Gunners boss is in his 18th year at the club and the north London club want to extend his tenure.

Elsewhere, Borussia Moenchengladbach’s Dutch striker Luuk De Jong has issued a come-and-get-me plea to Newcastle and Samir Nasri’s dad has blasted Newcastle’s Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa for a ‘spiteful’ tackle that almost ended his son’s World Cup dream.

Arsenal step up chase for Draxler

image

Arsenal added quality to their midfield in the summer with Mesut Ozil moving to London from Real Madrid. Along with Ozil, the reemergence of talent such as Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere, means Arsene Wenger doesn’t have to pay over the odds for midfield talent.

According to one newspaper today Wenger is looking to bring in Schalke star midfielder Julian Draxler. The Gunners have reportedly discovered a £40 million buy-out clause in his contract at the Bundesliga club, and are set to swoop in January or the summer.

Arsenal chase Everton’s Coleman

image

Arsenal are searching for a replacement right-back if Bacary Sagna refuses to renew his contract at the club. Arsene Wenger is looking to Everton’s young defender Seamus Coleman as the possible solution.

Coleman is a Republic of Ireland international and has been in fantastic form for the Toffees so far this campaign. He is part of Everton’s mean defense that has only conceded 13 goals so far this season.

If Arsenal are serious about challenging for the league this season it may take more reinforcements than a single defender. A position worth looking at would be up front - cover for Olivier Giroud could be crucial in case he picks up an injury later in the season.

Wenger could make Benteke move

Arsene Wenger yesterday moved to distance himself from rumors he is set to buy a striker in January. The Arsenal boss thinks they have enough firepower with Theo Walcott not far from a return.

However, if today’s newspapers are to be believed then Wenger is set for a swoop for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke. The forward looked set to leave in the summer before signing a new long-term contract. It could take a sizable sum to tempt Villa to part with their star striker.
