Lionel Messi opts for pizza, Pique a fan of Nutella sandwiches after games

image

It could be suggested that our obsession with soccer players borders on the absurd. For instance, take the quasi-firestorm that was drummed up after a reporter from Spanish newspaper Libertad Digital leaked a photo of Barcelona’s post-game meal selections.

Seems a bit bizarre to snap a photo of what players eat after a game, but look! Look at what these guys chow down on!

Lionel Messi has his eyes on a pizza (which is the biggest hit), although La Pulga opts for plain cheese. A few players (like Mr. Shakira, Gerard Pique) selected Nutella, a chocolate and hazelnut spread, to make a tasty sandwich.

Perhaps the most surprising reveal? Take a guess at who has the biggest appetite. If you guessed Luis Suarez, you’re wrong.

None other than diminutive midfield maestro Andres Iniesta, with an order of a ham and cheese pizza alongside a chorizo sausage and cheese sandwich, seems to have the biggest stomach.

Perhaps it seems like a lot, but consider how much running around these guys do, they can eat whatever they want.

Now, who said a picture of a menu would be boring?

Spanish national team goes lingerie shopping in Washington D.C.

image

Thank goodness for TMZ.

If it wasn’t for the gossip site’s omnipresent video cameras, we would never know how Spain’s national team players shop for their wives and girlfriends.

As it turns out, they do it the same way us regular folk do - by awkwardly browsing through Victoria’s Secret:

Ahead of their last World Cup tune-up match against El Salvador in Washington DC, Sergio Ramos, Pepe Reina, Andres Iniesta and Pedro used some of their free time to go panty shopping at the mall together.

Let’s just hope they don’t use the purchases to hold more secret strip poker tournaments in their hotel rooms.

World Cup stickers: Then-and-now photos of stars from 2006-2014

The fine folks over at Eurosport did some digging and came up with some of the best old-school Panini sticker cards of stars at the World Cup. Without further ado, here are some of our favorite before-and-after looks:image

Look at that! Even the dashing Cristiano Ronaldo went through an awkward phase. It looks like the sunshine of Madrid has treated the Portuguese quite nicely over the years. Not only did he pick up a tan, he also picked up another earring!imageThe 2006 edition of Clint Dempsey would fit right in where the 2014 edition plies his footballing trade professionally: Seattle, a.k.a. the grunge capital of the world.

Look at little Lionel Messi. Eight years of tirelessly running around melted that baby fat from 2006 right off.

Iniesta ignores young pitch invader while she hugs him

We’re sure that Andres Iniesta normally loves the support of his fans, but when a young girl ran onto the field to hug her idol after Barcelona’s loss to Granada on Saturday, we can’t blame him for trying to brush her off.

Her timing was less than ideal: it was during a TV interview. After a loss. To a team that hasn’t defeated your club since 1972.

Come on, kiddo. Not cool.

You have to give her credit for her commitment to the hug. That girl has a death-grip on Iniesta’s waist. But was it worth the inevitable months of being grounded?

Nike Soccer unveils new Magista football boot

image

BARCELONA — With the help of hometown hero Andres Iniesta, Nike lifted the lid on the radical new design in Barcelona unveiling their latest addition to its Flynit technology family: the Magista Football boot.

The Magista features a Dynamic Fit collar that rises past the ankle, an almost sock-like feature. “With Magista, we’ve designed a shoe that feels like an extension of the player’s body. This isn’t a boot that just goes on your foot, it’s a boot that works with your foot,” Nike’s VP of Sport Performance Footwear Phil McCartney said during Thursday’s event. “By eliminating distractions, players are free to unlock their potential and creativity.”

Barcelona’s star midfielder was equally impressed as well.

FIFPro World XI consists exclusively of Bayern, PSG, Real and Barca players

imageLast year, for reasons we’re still trying to comprehend, every single member of the FIFPro World XI came out of La Liga. This time around, there thankfully was a little more diversity, though some will undoubtedly still complain over an apparent La Liga bias amongst the players who voted.

The biggest gripe will probably come over the inclusion of Xavi — over the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger or Arturo Vidal — who for his standards experienced a down year, and was completely taken apart by Bayern Munich’s midfield in last season’s Champions League.

Liverpool fans, too, will be frustrated that Luis Suarez was not rewarded for his fantastic form, although you can’t argue against Zlatan Ibrahmovic either. Meanwhile, Sergio Ramos keeps getting a spot in the World XI (it’s his fourth inclusion) despite probably having been sent off for challenges on every player who voted for him.

The 2013 FIFPro World XI:

GK: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich)

DEF: Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Thiago Silva (Paris St-Germain), Dani Alves (Barcelona)

MID: Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Xavi (Barcelona), Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich)

FWD: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Paris Saint-Germain), Lionel Messi (Barcelona)
