Hulk scores on scintillating solo run as Zenit reach UCL group stage

Hulk doesn’t need to smash to be a menace on the field. Sometimes, a little solo run past three hapless defenders will do just fine, as was the case Tuesday against Standard Liege.

The robust Brazilian striker scored two goals to send Zenit into their third straight Champions League group stage. The first was a penalty kick, and the second was, well, just watch:

Hulk scores cracking goal in season opener

Uh oh. Hulk is back smashing things again.

Probably still angry over Brazil’s embarrassing end to their World Cup campaign last month, the Zenit attacker took all his frustration out on poor Arsenal Tula on Matchday 1 of the new Russian Premier League campaign.

Lord have mercy! Goalkeeper Aleksandr Filimonov might actually be glad he didn’t get in the way of that one. He easily could’ve lost a hand or worse.

Zenit won their season opener on the road, 4-0.

Zenit fan punches Dynamo Moscow player during mass pitch invasion

One of Russia’s top clashes has been called off after fans stormed the field and one of them punched a visiting player in the head.

Dynamo Moscow was leading Zenit St. Petersburg 4-2 in the 87th minute Sunday when Zenit spectators surged from the stands. A loss by Zenit would damage its hopes of winning the Russian Premier League. It is unclear if the score will be the final result.

Broadcasts showed one fan running to Dynamo defender Vladimir Granat and hitting him in the head from behind. Dynamo sporting director Guram Adzhoev told local media that Granat has a head injury. In 2012, a Zenit-Dynamo match was abandoned when a flare thrown from the Zenit fan section injured Dynamo goalkeeper Anton Shunin.

We at the FOX Soccer Blog do not condone violence, but we have to say: That is one dreadful looking right hook. Thumbs down all the way around for this disgusting act.

The Hulks take over Instagram

Simply adorable.  This picture was posted to Zenit St Petersburg striker Hulk’s Instagram over the weekend, along with the caption:

"Besides the protection of God, also have two super heroes at home."

Apparently, the two were quite pumped up about daddy’s performances recently. In last week’s Champions League bout at his former club Porto, Hulk scored the match-winning goal after paying a visit to Porto’s new sculpture dedicated to him at the Estadio do Dragao stadium:

Zenit player scores, swears at fans, gets red card

You stay classy Roman Shirokov.

The Zenit midfielder was subbed on in the 59th minute of a match against Volga, and he certainly made an impression. In stoppage time, Shirokov scored Zenit’s third goal, securing a 3-1 victory.

But then he carried out a bizarre celebration.

After the goal, Shirokov proceeded to flip off the home crowd. The referee wasted no time, and sent him off with a straight red card.

Apparently the fans were booing as he was subbed on because he tweeted “CSKA deserved the championship” after CSKA Moscow won the league, which assured a second place finish for Zenit. This appeared to be his way of repaying them.

Big-spending Russian’s Zenit resist Liverpool’s charge

A Jamie Carragher error ultimately proved costly as Liverpool were edged out of the Europa League despite a fine 3-1 comeback against Zenit St. Petersburg.

The veteran defender, making his 150th - and now last - European appearance, gifted Zenit’s star forward Hulk a goal that gave the Russians a 3-0 aggregate lead early in the second leg of the last-32 tie.
