Chicken restaurant trolls Rooney with burger special

If Wayne Rooney thought his World Cup couldn’t get any worse, he may want to look away now!

After failing to perform on the global stage for England, Rooney has come in for some heavy criticism from media and fans.

The striker has since apologized for his and the Three Lions’ performances in Brazil, however it wasn’t enough for one restaurant. The Chicken Lodge in Middleton, England is selling a special Rooney burger for the remainder of the tournament, using some of the labels aimed at the Manchester United forward.

No word on whether or not this burger is prepared using cruelty-free meat.

Wayne Rooney shares his World Cup playlist

If you’ve ever wanted to know what music gets Wayne Rooney prepared for matches, you’re in luck. The England striker shared his World Cup playlist on Twitter, and the mix of songs is rather fascinating.

It kicks off with Drunk In Love, because let’s be honest, no playlist would be complete without Beyonce on it.

Rooney follows that up with a strong selection of English artists — perhaps looking to get some inspiration from his fellow countrymen? Ed Sheeran, Jake Bugg, Passenger, James Blunt, Mumford & Sons and Sam Smith all made the cut.

But what is most interesting concerning about this list? The lack of upbeat music. It seems more suited for relaxing than getting hyped for a soccer match. Maybe it’s to help him fall asleep after the game?

Golazo! Nike strikes gold with “Winner Stays” commercial

Who among us hasn’t dreamed of actually being one of our sports idols? We’re not sure where the practice of saying an icon’s name when playing pick-up came about, but we’ve all done it.

Nike Football found a way to cash in on this schoolyard quirk, and the result is gold. Watch “Winner Stays” for yourself to see and review our favorite highlights from Nike’s ‘Risk Everything’ football campaign:

  • The kid calling out “Neymar” for pulling a totally non-Neymar move and shying away from a one-on-one
  • Double the “David Luiz”
  • A possible World Cup preview with “Pique” tackling “Neymar,” his Barcelona teammate!
  • "Zlatan" insisting "Zlatan" take a free-kick
  • Cameos from Kobe Bryant, Anderson Silva, and Jon “Bones” Jones
  • "Iniesto!"
  • And of course, Ronaldo having the support of the one fan who matters most:

Beckhamesque! Wayne Rooney scores from halfway line

imageImages: Reuters

Wayne Rooney makes $500,000 a week for Manchester United, which would normally infuriate every single one of us. But on this weekend, he’s worth every penny of that sum. Why do we say that?

Because look at this goal, that’s why:

Simply stunning.

Rooney’s half-volley rocket from about the halfway line gave United an early, thunderous 1-0 lead over West Ham, and David Moyes a rare reason to jump up off his bench in ecstasy. On the other side, poor Hammers keeper Adrian could only tumble to the ground helplessly as the ball swerved up and over him.

Good thing David Beckham was sitting down. The United legend was in attendance with his sons, clearly impressed by what he just witnessed:

Beckham, of course, knows a thing or two about scoring long-range golazos. He smashed one in from a similar spot as Rooney seventeen and a half years ago, against Wimbledon:

So, whose is better?

Sky Sports (h/t BBC Sport) asked Rooney himself if his goal was better than Beckham’s, to which the Rooney replied: “Of course, yeah!”

"It was just instinct," Rooney added. "I turned, had a quick look and saw the keeper off the line. I’ve tried it many times and thankfully it went in."

Mario Balotelli takes shot at Three Lions

image

This summer, Mario Balotelli will square off against many familiar faces as his Italy side takes on England in the World Cup, and he clearly isn’t worried about it. Talking with reporters, the former Premier League striker said that aside from Wayne Rooney and Joe Hart, no England player would be good enough to make the Italy squad.

From the Daily Mail:

"Wayne Rooney I am sure would get in any squad that will be in Brazil - he is one of those few special players. Manchester United had many good players - but when I was at City (manager) Roberto Mancini and the coaches would always teach us pay attention to Rooney - and make it clear he is the one that can hurt us.

'I know that Joe (Hart) is one of the top five goalkeepers in the world - there is no argument about that. He had some games that he would not have been pleased with earlier this season but the best players in the world hit some bad form.

Both Rooney and Joe are of the highest quality but once you look past those two I don’t see an obvious player from England that would make the Italy team or even squad.”

We’re not here to argue whether he’s right, but one thing is for sure: when these two face off this summer, it’s going to get heated.

Real Madrid to raid Manchester United for Rooney

image

While the potential Juan Mata move from London to Manchester grabs the headlines, it seems that a giant of football is waiting in the wings to capitalize. Mata seems destined for Manchester United, but could a star be shipped out to accommodate him?

It seems likely, and considering Real Madrid’s lure, who could forgive Wayne Rooney for having his head turned? He’s hankered for a move twice during his Manchester stay, but this January could finally see Rooney spread his wings and join a star-studded Bernabeu cast.

Also in our morning British paper round-up is an update on the Mata situation, a potential midfielder moving to Liverpool, Arsenal preparing a bid for Julian Draxler and plenty, plenty more at the click of a button.
