Poor Utrecht defender Mike van der Hoorn nicked in an embarrassing own goal this weekend that gave AZ a 4-0 lead before halftime. After the Utrecht defense already let USMNT striker Jozy Altidore score a hat trick within 10 minutes earlier in the half, van der Hoorn’s miscue sealed all hopes for a comeback.
You can probably remember the most recent own goals in the Premier League. Fabian Delph for Aston Villa against Fulham this weekend? Matt Kilgallon for Sunderland away at Chelsea? Well, we can probably forgive them as a lapse in concentration or being very unlucky! This cannot be said for Utrecht player Mike Van Der Hoorn, who inexplicably put the ball in his own net under absolutely no pressure! On a weekend full of high-profile own goals (see Rooney, Wayne; Ba, Demba) this one by Barcelona’s Jordi Alba against Deportivo La Coruna takes the cake. Truly one of the most brilliant own goals you’ll ever see.
Thankfully for Jordi, his goal at the other end to open the scoring held up as the difference in a wild 5-4 Barca win.
