Juan Mata arrives for medical in helicopter

The eagle has landed!

Juan Mata arrived at Manchester United’s training complex via chartered helicopter Saturday morning for his medical, which will finalize the club’s most expensive transfer ever at $61 million.

And obviously, everyone is really happy about it:

David de Gea didn’t waste any time getting a swipe in. He was a bit nicer when he actually greeted his new teammate for the first time.

Man Utd to break bank for Vidal

image

The rumors keep rolling in for Manchester United supporters. A fortnight ago it was Wesley Sneijder, last week it was Atletico star Koke and Dortmund’s Marco Reus. Who will fill that midfield role now the transfer window has opened?

In Thursday’s English newspapers, Juventus’ Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal is the latest name to be linked with a move to Old Trafford. Vidal has been one of Juve’s outstanding players and one of the reasons they have won back-to-back Scudetto’s in recent years. It is certain United will have to break the bank for the midfielder, especially in the inflated January sales.

David Beckham explains horror Manchester United initiation

imageBefore gaining fame for his free kicks, “Bend it like Beckham” held a different meaning in the United locker room. (Image: Getty)

"The Class of ‘92," an upcoming documentary about the Manchester United youth academy’s most famous graduates, always promised to offer an inside look into the rise of David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Co. But is this simply too much information?

In the run-up to Sunday’s premiere in London, Beckham was forced to delve into his memory bank and recount a quite uncomfortable tale of his initiation into the senior side. While every new member was hazed in some way, Beckham said he got the worst of it; he was required to perform a sex act on himself whilst staring at a picture of eighties Reds legend Clayton Blackmore.

The picture probably looked something like this:

In an interview with Metro.com, Beckham said:

“Everyone had an initiation that you had to go through on the youth team, that was one of the most uncomfortable ones, I got the short straw!

“The fact that I had to look at Clayton Blackmore’s calendar and do certain things…while looking at Clayton Blackmore.”

"I was embarrassed when I was saying it on camera let alone talking about it more. But it’s something that we all had to go through. It was definitely something I wouldn’t like to go through again!"

Again, no further comment from us. Let’s just check out the film’s official trailer instead:

Sir Alex Ferguson gets his own road named after him

image

As if getting your own stand and statue at Old Trafford isn’t enough to remind people of your greatness, Sir Alex Ferguson has now also been honored with his very own road.

Dubbed “Sir Alex Ferguson Way,” the road lies adjacent to OT and should help identify the Manchester United coaching legend to those who have been living under a rock for, well, the past quarter of a century.

Before unveiling the sign, Ferguson said:

It’s a privilege and an honor to have a road named after me. You don’t expect these things in life. It encapsulates probably the last 26 years - coming to the great club, the history of it. It’s been an incredible journey for me, ending today for me to unveil this road sign: Sir Alex Ferguson Way.

I’m really proud of that and I’m proud of everyone who has been associated with the club.

I’d like to thank Manchester United for inviting me down here, 26 years ago. It was a fantastic elevation in my life and a challenge I accepted. And we are where we are now.

The 71-year-old Scot was also awarded the Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Trafford at a formal ceremony on Monday. The Honorary Freedom is the highest honor that the council can bestow, recognizing outstanding contribution to services in the borough. It has only been awarded two other times.

Apparently, winning 38 trophies in 26 years counts as “outstanding contributions.” Tough to argue that.

Sir Alex is the second United legend to have a road named after him, following Sir Matt Busby, one of his coaching predecessors. Sources speculate that, at this point, it is unlikely for current manager David Moyes to also get a road of his own one day.

Instead, Moyes will have just one more thing to remind him how impossible his task is of filling Sir Alex’s ginormous shoes.

Manchester United show interest in Newcastle’s Cabaye

image

The rumors are still as rife as ever down at Old Trafford, however, Manchester United seem to have switched attention away from Cesc Fabregas and selling Wayne Rooney.

In today’s papers they are heavily linked to Newcastle’s French international midfielder Yohan Cabaye. The Magpies seem to be having another clear out and Cabaye tops United’s list.

Ever since he helped out Cristiano Ronaldo with his sprinting technique when the Portuguese striker was at Manchester United, the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt, has expressed a wish to play for the Red Devils.

Some within the club even reciprocate his wish, with defender Rio Ferdinand leading the clamor for Bolt to pull on a red shirt and turn out for the Premier League champions.

Well finally, we and Rio are gonna get our wish!

That’s right. Usain Bolt will apparently take his place alongside United’s current greats in Rio’s testimonial against Sevilla on August 9.

It must have taken a lot for Rio to convince new boss David Moyes to sign Bolt up for one game only, but it will certainly put all eyes on Old Trafford to see whether Bolt’s soccer skills can match his sprint speed.
