Hibernian player hits flying seagull during preseason game

PULL!

Callum Booth of Scottish club Hibernian took part in some impromptu trapshooting as his attempted clearance during a friendly match struck a  seagull high above the pitch.

Luckily, the seagull was able to take the hit like a champ and reroute its flight. It is said that Fulham manager Felix Magath was so impressed by the seagull’s toughness that the club has prepared an offer sheet in an attempt to boost their woeful defense.

Crazy Dutch fan gets Louis van Gaal, RvP tattooed on his back

It has been a terrific start to the 2014 World Cup by the Netherlands. So much so, that one super fan decided to take his love to the next level.

Dutch-based singer Andre Pronk took the brave decision to get Robin van Persie and Louis van Gaal tattooed on his back — perhaps prematurely. Just watch:

Mr. Pronk dropped into a Rotterdam tattoo shop to request the ink of the Oranje boss’ face — above the iconic image of RvP’s looping header against Spain:

Netherlands have made a great start to the tournament in Brazil, but you can’t help think that these body stamps may come back to haunt him!

Whoops! World Cup opening ceremony displays the wrong nation’s flag

imageThis guy has the correct Nigeria flag. (Getty Images)

As we all know, Thursday’s World Cup opener did not go off without a hitch.

A bank of floodlights in Sao Paulo’s stadium went out inside the first 15 minutes of the match, the doves released met an untimely demise, and we all know about Pitbull’s costume. But even though we kept a running diary of everything that happened yesterday, we still managed to miss the perhaps most egregious moment of the entire day:

Yup, the organizers of the World Cup opening ceremony displayed Niger’s flag on the giant globe… while announcing Nigeria. Oops!

Neymar is ready for the World Cup

imageNeymar had one goal and two assists against Panama. (Action Images)

Brazil played its penultimate World Cup warm-up match against Panama on Tuesday, though it also could be described as Neymar’s own personal tune-up game.

The Selecao’s great hope used the game to play himself into tournament form, opening the scoring with a magnificent free kick in the first half, then conjuring up a magical back-heel assist for Hulk in the second.

Pin-point accuracy? Check.

Back-heel touch? Check and check.

Brazil won the friendly match, 4-0, but more importantly, Neymar’s confidence is through the roof right now. Can the World Cup start already?

Ajax manager, players pranked by Adidas over new kits

The Dutch just might be the most gullible people in the world. At least, that’s the conclusion you would have to draw after watching this video.

Ajax sponsor Adidas and the club’s marketing director Edwin van der Sar decided to pull a prank on manager Frank de Boer and several of his players by pretending to consult them on their new kits for next season. But instead of the actual jerseys, a hired actor presented them with truly absurd spoof kits.

image

Ajax’s classic home shirt with the bold red stripe in the middle suddenly featured ‘typical Dutch imagery’ such as tulips or bicycles, while away kits ranged from a tie-dye version to T-shirt tuxedos and those large animal face tees you might see on kindergartners.

The fake kits are so laughably awful that it makes de Boer and his players look even more preposterous for falling for it. At one point, the befuddled coach tells van der Sar, “I have a feeling we won’t be taken seriously.”

image

Now, it’s us who can’t take you seriously, Frank.

Giant animal face jerseys? Come on! If that’s not a dead giveaway you’re being “punk’d” then nothing is. Shame on everyone involved.

Soccer player dies of injuries suffered from brutal tackle

Watch the play at the 0:32 second mark.

A professional soccer player died of his injuries six days after suffering a horror tackle in an Indonesian Premier League match.

Persiraja forward Akli Fairuz was struck in the chest by PSAP Sigli goalkeeper Agus Rahman’s studs-up challenge after the two were racing toward a ball that ricocheted off Rahman’s chest and back into play. Fairuz got to the ball first and scored a goal (which would then be disallowed for offside), but not before Rahman’s crunching tackle left the striker in a heap on the ground.

According to the Daily Mail, though Fairuz was able to leave the field and appeared to be OK, even watching the end of the match from the bench, afterward it was discovered he suffered severe internal injuries. After undergoing surgery and spending six days in a hospital, Fairuz tragically passed away on May 16.

A-League offers a lifetime’s worth of bloopers in one season

We here at the FOX Soccer Blog love ourselves a good fail. But nothing could have prepared us for the video below.

That’s right. What we have here is nearly 20 full minutes of epic fails of every variety from Australia’s A-League. You want own goals? You get own goals! You want headshots, groin shots and unsuspecting ball boys getting popped? You got it.

Howlers, whiffs, streakers … you name it, it happened. This doesn’t bode well for the Socceroos, but please never change.

Puppies invade pitch in Bolivia, but player ruins the fun

Now if this isn’t just a little bit of a cute overdose, we don’t know what is. Apparently bored with the goings-on of a match between The Strongest and Universitario in the Bolivian top flight, a few puppies decided to take to the field and play a game of their own.

Unfortunately for the three pups, an angry Universitario player didn’t enjoy their precious little romp. He snatched at one of the furry pitch invaders, wrestling with it for a bit. Not one to let a fun time be ruined, the pooch seemed to fight back, possibly even nipping the human-sized buzzkill.

That’ll teach him not to use his hands!

Luckily for humanity (and probably the player, lest he be taped harming an innocent puppy), a saintly ball boy intervened before the player escalated the incident.

The lesson here: puppies are the cutest and you should just let them play.
