Mesut Ozil promises to pay for 23 childrens’ surgeries following World Cup win

German international Mesut Ozil won the World Cup just last week, but now he’s making inroads into winning our hearts.

Ozil initially pledged to pony up for 11 surgeries for children in Brazil prior to the World Cup, as part of the BigShoe campaign:

A generous gesture by itself, now Ozil’s pledge has more than doubled in size since winning the coveted World Cup. Instead of sponsoring 11 surgeries, the Arsenal standout will pay for operations for 23 kids — the same number of players in the German squad. Ozil explained the contribution Facebook:

dear fans,
prior to the #WorldCup I supported the surgery of eleven sick children. since the victory of the #WorldCup is not only due to eleven players but to our whole team, I will now raise the number to 23. this is my personal thank-you for the hospitality of the people of Brazil. #Bigshoe #Brasil2014

The World Cup truly does seem to bring out the best in people, and certainly did in Mesut Ozil’s case … a class player and a class person.

Arsenal step up chase for Draxler

Arsenal added quality to their midfield in the summer with Mesut Ozil moving to London from Real Madrid. Along with Ozil, the reemergence of talent such as Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere, means Arsene Wenger doesn’t have to pay over the odds for midfield talent.

According to one newspaper today Wenger is looking to bring in Schalke star midfielder Julian Draxler. The Gunners have reportedly discovered a £40 million buy-out clause in his contract at the Bundesliga club, and are set to swoop in January or the summer.

Mesut Ozil plays keepy-uppy with chewing gum

It looks like there is nothing Mesut Ozil can’t do right now. After three assists in four matches for the Gunners, the German international appears to have turned around the fortunes of the club. And in his latest act of greatness, Ozil brought out the ol’ gum-juggling trick during warm-ups before Arsenal’s clash with Swansea on Saturday.

Dubbed “the Magician” more than occasionally in both Germany and Spain, Ozil proves he indeed has quite a few tricks up his sleeve. If he ever needs any extra work or a new hobby after football, surely a stint working in the circus could be his next calling.

Ozil’s Arsenal debut went pretty well

image

When the signing of Mesut Ozil was finally announced on transfer deadline day, nobody should have been more excited than Olivier Giroud. The French striker must have been doing cartwheels in his underwear when he heard Cristiano Ronaldo’s personal assist master would henceforth supply him with goals practically served on a silver platter.

It didn’t take long, either.

Ozil needed just ten minutes in his Gunners debut to prove he is well worth the club record fee of $66 million. Check out this classy first touch and perfectly-weighted ball played to Giroud, who just needed to slot home to hand Ozil his first Premier League assist:

This should be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Arsenal won the match 3-1, but did get a late scare when Giroud went down in a heap with what looked like a non-contact knee injury. Should the prolific Frenchman — who has started the season with 4 goals in 4 EPL games — miss a few matches, Arsenal would be down to just three strikers: Yaya Sanogo, academy product Chuba Akbom and, gulp, Nicklas Bendtner.

That’s… not desirable, but in any case, Ozil’s debut should give Gunners fans plenty of confidence for the season.
