Legia Warsaw trolled with Champions League anthem ahead of Polish league match

image

Polish champions Legia Warsaw still haven’t gotten over their harsh Champions League exit on a clerical error, when on Friday they were mercilessly ridiculed by their next Polish league opponents.

After their 6-1 aggregate victory over Celtic was wiped away over fielding an ineligible player for the final four minutes of the second leg, Legia were greeted by Ekstraklasa side Jagiellonia Bialystok with the Champions League anthem blaring in the stadium as the teams took the field!

That’s some A+ trolling right there, but justice was eventually served as Legia went on to whip the cynical opposition, 3-0.

Holy cow: Herd of cows invades pitch during Copa Peru match

image

Pitch invaders are nothing new in soccer, but these latest scenes out of Peru could take the cake.

A Copa Peru match between Minsa FBC and Expreso Inambari was disrupted when a herd of cows decided to make its way through the pitch.

Fortunately for us, a reporter was on hand to catch video of the invasion:

Look at them go! It appears they were on a cattle drive and just happened to wander through the game, but can you blame them? The pitch looks like it’s in dire need of some trimming anyway, so why not let them graze for a bit?

After the roughly two-minute interruption, play resumed down in Peru, with Minsa squeaking out a 1-0 win. We’re hoping they didn’t go out for burgers to celebrate.

Francesco Totti trolls new teammate Ashley Cole

image

Remember the Roma team picture from last week featuring an isolated Ashley Cole looking like an outcast?

The picture made the rounds last week on social media, inspiring a meme and even its own Twitter handle, @LurkingAshley.

Cole himself couldn’t help but laugh at himself:

Now, Roma captain Francesco Totti has provided the icing on the cake.

For the squad’s latest team photo (on the Rocky Steps, no less), Totti deliberately “pulled an Ashley” and stood off to the side. Check it out:

Totti. What a legend!

FAIL! Fernando Torres pulls a Torres, misses wide-open net from a yard out

Fernando Torres fail (Chelsea vs Olimpija… by footazo

Fernando Torres is already in his mid-season form. Unfortunately, that’s “Torres’ form,” and not anybody else’s.

How do you mess this up? HOW?!

At least Jose Mourinho will be happy to know that if he needs his team to miss a sitter, Torres is still his guy.

Cristiano Ronaldo joins Japanese TV show, hilarity ensues

Cristiano Ronaldo is about as straight-laced as professional athletes get. His work ethic is the stuff of legend, and rarely is he seen goofing off when there are trophies to be won.

So, popping the Portuguese star on a zany Japanese TV show was a recipe for awesomeness. Right from the start the Real Madrid talisman appears uncomfortable, with fog machines, crazy lights and a mob of fans that seem just a bit too close.

Of course, Ronaldo is then given a bouquet of flowers with which he has no idea what to do with, and a life-size photo of him shirtless and flexing is subsequently walked out onto the stage.

The highlight of the entire spectacle comes at the 2:25 mark in the video, where one of the hosts tries out the “facial fitness” product Ronaldo has brought around. It’s tremendous to watch by itself, but even better in GIF form:

Arsenal stars practice their New York accents before USA summer trip

This is just too good.

Ahead of Arsenal’s first pre-season game in the United States in 25 years, several of the Gunners worked on their New York City accents to amazing results.

Carl Jenkinson, Kieran Gibbs, Mathieu Flamini, and Serge Gnabry (two Brits, a Frenchman and a German) gave it their best effort, and that’s all you pretty much can say about it:

If you’re keeping score, Jenkinson wins by default.

Open champ and Man United fan Rory McIlroy booed by Liverpool locals

image

Rory McIlroy dominated the Open Championship this past weekend, leading from start to finish en route to his third major golf championship of his career. But the 25-year-old did make one grave error: He took a moment during his acceptance speech to mention his allegiance to football club Manchester United.

The problem? The Open was held at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake. Whoops!

Needless to say, the Merseyside locals were none too pleased:

That’s a one-stroke penalty, Roy!

Swiss League opener yields best own goal you’ll see all year

While most leagues in Europe are just now getting back in the groove with preseason friendlies, over in Switzerland the 2014/15 season got already back underway on Saturday, and it didn’t take long for Milan Gajic of Young Boys Bern to score perhaps the goal of the season.

Unfortunately, he put it in his own net!

Gajic put St. Gallen ahead, 2-1, with this incredible half-volley from outside the box that thundered past his goalkeeper and into the top corner:

It might well be Gajic’s greatest goal he’ll ever score, but this is hardly the way he wanted to kick-start his season.

Young Boys did go on the equalize late in the game to at least secure a point in their opener.

Liga MX is back and already providing wacky entertainment

Anyone that watches Liga MX knows that crazy things happen all the time, and today’s match between Leon and America was no exception. The Apertura is barely underway, and Leon goalkeeper William Yarbrough has put himself in the running for blunder of the season with this one:

From the slip to holding the ball out to chucking it back over the line, this is golden material for a soccer blooper reel.

The only question is why did he hold on? WHY? Put it over the bar, punch it out — anything but exactly what he did would’ve worked out just fine.

Blackpool cancels preseason tour due to lack of players

image

Blackpool have canceled their pre-season tour in Spain citing a lack of available players.

The Championship side has just eight players signed to the active roster after 27 left the club at the end of last season. It is unclear if that many players have ever left the same club in a single summer before, but we’re guessing this is a record.

Based on who they do have under contract, the best Blackpool could do is field a fairly aggressive 3-1-4 formation, with no goalkeeper. That’s right. A second-division club in England currently has just one midfielder and no goalkeepers under contract. Good luck with that!

Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston told the club’s website:

"I see absolutely no reason why we shouldn’t be able to recruit sufficient numbers and quality to be able to compete in the Championship.

"The main thing people want to see is players signing for us and I think once we get some signed, and everything settles down, then we’ll soon forget about some of the problems.

"We’re finding it difficult to land some of the players we’ve been chasing.

"That’s always the case, but unfortunately it’s with the backdrop of not having many players, so it probably focuses things a little more than would normally be the case."

FIFA rules require a team to field a minimum of seven players for games to be valid, so technically The Seasiders could still play. However, that would obviously still be pretty dumb.

Instead of getting embarrassed on the road, the team has decided to skip the tour and concentrate on player recruitment. A wise choice in our book.
