Referees, Pep Guardiola commit Champions League fashion taboos

image

If it’s one thing we learned on Matchday 1 of the Champions League, it’s that people are not loving the new referee kits.

It’s not just that they’re ugly. During the Dortmund-Arsenal match, it was difficult to tell where the ref even was at times.

Or maybe it has something to do with the fact that we can’t tell if they’re actually a referee or just a random fan who got lost on his way to his seat and nobody bothered to stop them?

image"Somebody, stop that fan! Oh … it’s you.

Yeah, maybe that’s it.

Sadly, the official’s new threads were not even close to being the biggest fashion disaster this week.

That honor belongs to none other than Bayern manager Pep Guardiola.

Always dressed to the nines on the sidelines, this time Pep forgot about a small but critical component to his outfit:

THE ZIPPER! OMG! SOMEBODY TELL PEP HIS FLY IS OPEN!!

Not a good look. Not a good look at all.

Thailand’s women’s national team gets cash bonus for losing ‘only’ 5-0

image

Thailand’s women’s national team lost 5-0 to South Korea in their Asia Games opener this weekend, a pretty discouraging way to open the tournament. Unless, of course, if you’re on the team.

Believe it or not, the Thailand FA awarded each player a bonus of 100,000 Thai baht ($6,200) for only losing 5-0. We kid you not.

"We fared better in the second half," the FA president told the Nation newspaper. “The association had planned to give the team 200,000 baht ($6,200) if they won the match, but, for the players’ efforts, we decided to hand them 100,000 as consolation.”

Um, where can we sign up for a roster spot?

In America, we often hear complaints over giving out participation trophies at youth tournaments. This is a little worse, don’t you think?

Thomas Vermaelen has difficulty getting into Barcelona car park

image

Amused by famous people suffering through real-world problems?

Then you’ll love new Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen having some serious issues getting his Audi into the club’s car park:

Good thing Vermalen had about five different guys instructing him with violent hand gestures and dozens of fans egging him on. I’m sure that calmed his nerves.

The whole ordeal took about two minutes, but the former Arsenal man finally did get his Audi into the park without a scratch.

Now you only have to do that, what, 200 more times this season? Good luck, bud!

Birmingham’s Wes Thomas scores net-breaking goal

image

Birmingham City’s Championship game against Leeds United on Saturday was delayed for nine minutes after Wes Thomas’s 38th-minute goal literally broke the net.

Thomas dislodged the back left stanchion of the net with the game’s opening goal, and it took the ground staff a considerable amount of time to replace the broken support beam.

The crazy thing about it: Thomas even went with a finesse shot instead of power, yet still managed to break it! Birmingham, we have to talk about your net quality…

Croatian defender submits new frontrunner for ‘Worst Miss Ever’

image

Wolfsburg midfielder Junior Malanda can rest a little bit easier tonight. The title for “worst miss ever” has a new owner, and his name is Ilija Sivonjić.

The Croatian defender for second-division side Hrvatski Dragovoljac somehow managed to keep the ball out of his opponent’s net from literally an inch out. Not a foot. An inch. Like, the ball was already on the line. All Sivonjić needed to do was blow it across…

Welp!

Perhaps Sivonjić was confused and thought he was in his own penalty area? It’s the only possible explanation for doing such a fine job of keeping the ball from crossing the line.

Not even Malanda could dream up a worse goal-line miss!

This is a spectacular own-goal from the German fifth tier

There are own-goals, and then there is this fantastic screw up by Zamir Daudi of TGM SV Jügesheim.

It takes a certain amount of skill to put the ball into your own net while you are facing away from it, but that’s just what Daudi did:

There’s a certain twisted beauty in scoring an own goal that bad.

Junior Malanda is having a rough start to the Bundesliga season

It was just last Friday that Wolfsburg’s Junior Malanda had this horrendous miss against Bayern Munich.

As if he wasn’t already embarrassed enough, this happened on Saturday:

The poor guy just cannot catch a break. Maybe it’s a good thing the international break is coming up. He could probably use some time to reflect (and practice finishing).

Nigeria gift Germany Under-20 Women’s World Cup with mindless error

image

Germany have won the World Cup this summer, the Under-19 European Championships, and now, the Women’s Under-20 World Cup as well.

Lena Petermann did her best Mario Goetze impression and scored the only goal of the final in the 98th minute of extra time to seal the Germans’ third triumph in the span of six weeks — but it could have been very different were it not for a colossal error by their Nigerian opposition.

In the 83rd minute, the Super Eagles thought Asisat Oshoala - voted the tournament’s best player - scored the late winner after her header beat the German goalkeeper, but the goal was correctly ruled out after her overzealous teammate Loveth Ayila thundered the ball across the line needlessly from an offside position.

D’oh!
