World Cup Day 17: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

image

What’s worse? The fact we won’t be seeing Mexico coach Miguel Herrera in action anymore, or the brutal way his side crashed out of the World Cup? Probably the former.

The controversial call leading to El Tri’s elimination dominated the news cycle on Sunday, and for good reason. What else caught your eye on the second day of knockout round play? Check it out:

THE GOOD

Costa Rica’s amazing Cinderella story continued with a penalty shootout victory against Greece, handing them their first-ever place in the World Cup quarterfinals. Los Ticos also became the first CONCACAF side to reach this stage since the United States in 2002. Not too shabby for a tiny country that Mike Tirico mistook for an island on ESPN’s live broadcast.

Not impressed? What if we put it this way:

Mexico’s stars relax by playing beach soccer with Brazilian locals

Fresh from Tuesday’s valiant 0-0 draw with Brazil, the Mexico squad decided to show off their beach soccer skills. Instead of preparing for the crucial clash with Group A rivals Croatia on Monday, the players stripped down to their Speedos and invited some lucky locals to join in the fun:

El Tri forward Marco Fabian looked most at home on the shore — his silky flicks and delicate touches wowed spectators. Mexican teammate Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez was given a stint between the sticks. On this showing, the Little Pea should stick to what he does best — goal poaching:

When the sandy spectacle reached its climax, the players mingled with other locals, signing autographs and posing for photos. All the players came away from the beach unscathed, to the delight of Mexican supporters everywhere.

Referee sprays Mexican players’ boots with foam

During Portugal’s 1-0 win over Mexico on Friday, El Tri stars Andres Guardado and Jose Vazquez learned first-hand not to mess with referee Jeffrey Solis.

Before a free kick for the Portuguese, the Costa Rican official made sure Guardado and Vazquez followed the 10-yard rule to the eighth of an inch, spraying the line of magic foam right over their boots!

Brilliant!
