Didier Drogba hits his own banner with wayward free kick

imageImage: Reuters

Didier Drogba was awfully quiet in his highly-anticipated return to Stamford Bridge, as his Galatasaray side crashed out of the Champions League with a 2-0 second-leg loss to Chelsea. The former Blues striker and fan favorite struggled to get touches all night, but ‘The Drog’ still made sure he reminded Chelsea fans of the mark he left at the Bridge - literally!

In the first half with Chelsea already up 1-0, Drogba hit a free kick so poorly it struck a large “Drogba Legend” banner that hung in the upper tier of the Matthew Harding Stand.

Was it just a coincidence that Jose Mourinho discussed the prospect of Drogba returning to Chelsea, in any capacity, just hours earlier? Was Drogba sending a message that, yes, he indeed belonged in London? Or was it just a successful ploy by the Chelsea fans to distract Drogba with kindness and affection?

Either way, it made for a funny little moment in a not-so-funny night for Drogba.

Galatasaray pair face punishment for Nelson Mandela tribute

image

Seriously, what is wrong with the world?

Galatasaray’s Didier Drogba and teammate Emmanuel Eboue both face punishment from the Turkish FA for paying homage to Nelson Mandela after Friday’s 2-0 win over Elazigspor.

One night after Mandela’s death, Drogba revealed a shirt with the  message “Thank You Madiba,” (Madiba is Mandela’s clan name) while Eboue’s undershirt read “Rest In Peace Nelson Mandela.” Both players of course are African, and this was a show of their appreciation for one of the most important civil rights leaders in world history.

However, the Turkish FA deemed the messages to be the kind of “political expressions” they are currently trying to discourage players and fans from making at games. And despite the fact Drogba and Eboue’s messages were a tribute rather than a manifesto, the pair has been summoned to appear before the Turkish Professional Football Discipline Committee because they had not asked for permission first.

In response, Drogba took to Instagram with this message:

I’d be very interested to see your comments on this…but I’m sorry if I had to I would do it again and again.Nor because of political beliefs but because this man inspired me,a country, a continent, the world!!!!! Thanks again Madiba

Boogeyman Drogba denies Arsenal chance at silverware

Old habits are hard to break for Didier Drogba.

The Galatasaray striker just couldn’t stay away from a chance to haunt his old nemesis Arsenal once again, even if it was just the meaningless Emirates Cup. Drogba, who likes scoring goals against Arsenal as much as a normal 6-year-old might enjoy ice cream, scored two goals in the last 12 minutes to seal Galatasaray’s comeback win. The first came from the spot after drawing a rather soft penalty, the game-winner a classy finish off a brilliant Wesley Sneijder pass.

Fans at the Emirates Stadium must have been appalled at the team’s decision to invite Drogba’s team to the preseason dance. Arsene Wenger probably broke several jacket zippers in anger when he heard, because the Drog has been a boogeyman of sorts for the Gunners. While with Chelsea, he scored 13 goals in 14 matches against Arsenal, the most goals he’s tallied against a single opponent in his career.

Didier Drogba has to escort hugging pitch invader back to sideline

"Don’t let go! Don’t you ever let go!"

There are times when supporters take their love for a club or player a just little bit too far. Case in point: this heavily tattooed Chelsea fan — one of which is an image of Didier Drogba — who invaded the pitch during Galatasaray’s 3-0 victory against tiny Shrewsbury this weekend.

The fan “attacked” Drogba with a big bear hug and some kisses on the cheek, clearly with no intention of letting go of his favorite player. After a few seconds, Drogba tried to detach himself, but the man had other ideas — mainly, continuing to sweet-talk and cuddle up to his idol. We can only imagine what the fan was babbling in Drogba’s ear as the former Chelsea player actually had to escort him to the sideline himself.

Now that’s what we call a Stage-5 clinger!
