USA, MLS legend Landon Donovan confirms he will retire at end of season

image

Landon Donovan confirmed on his Facebook page that he will retire at the end of this Major League Soccer season:

After careful deliberation and after many conversations with those closest to me, I have decided that this will be my last season as a professional soccer player…

I feel incredibly blessed and lucky to have played a role in the remarkable growth of MLS and US Soccer during my playing career. And while my career as a player will soon be over, rest assured I will stay connected on many levels to the beautiful game.

As we enter a transformative time for the sport, I will do everything I can to help the continued growth of soccer in the United States. I look forward to making a difference, pursuing my passions and meeting all of you along the way in this next phase of my life.

Donovan, 32, will go down as the greatest American soccer player ever. He owns the United States men’s national team all-time records for goals (57), assists (58), and starts (140), and is only second to Cobi Jones with 156 caps:

Donovan also holds the all-time goalscoring record in MLS (138 goals), which he broke earlier this summer, and is second place all time in assists (124) and game-winning goals (38):

Landon Donovan definitely knows how to laugh at himself

You’re probably sick of hearing about Landon Donovan not making the USA’s World Cup team, but this ad is worth just one more mention of it.

Instead of Donovan sporting red, white and blue this summer, we get Landon in his bathrobe, slippers, moping around his apartment while playing as himself on FIFA.

Oh, and make sure you watch it all the way to the end.

That’s got to be one of the best eye-rolls ever.

He may not be going to Brazil, but at least Landon can still give American fans something to smile about.

Mike Magee trolls Jurgen Klinsmann’s son with Tweet

image

We all remember this, don’t we?

That was the imprudent, maligned Tweet posted - and quickly deleted - by Jurgen Klinsmann’s son Jonathan the day Landon Donovan was cut from the U.S. national team’s World Cup roster.

On Sunday, just three days after the roster snub, Donovan scored two goals against the Philadelphia Union to become Major League Soccer’s all-time leading scorer. Some response! To make the moment even better, reigning MLS MVP Mike Magee of the Chicago Fire couldn’t help but take the opportunity to stand up for his former Galaxy teammate and troll Klinsmann’s son hard at the same time.

Check it out:

Team Donovan 1, Team Klinsmann 0.

Let’s all take a moment to remember this Landon Donovan moment

US Soccer fans, we feel your pain. USA legend Landon Donovan isn’t on Jurgen Klinsmann’s World Cup roster for Brazil this summer, and it stinks. The all-time leading goalscorer will probably never play in a USA jersey ever again, and that’s rather sad.

So instead of getting to depressed about it, let’s just re-live arguably the best Landon Donovan moment in the history of US Soccer, shall we?

Feel better now? No?

Well, we tried.
