Best Goals of the FA Cup Third Round

image

Ah, the magic of the FA Cup.

The world’s oldest association football competition, traditionally rich with upsets every season, delivered the goods again this weekend. The stunner of the Third Round? Swansea knocked out Premier League champion Man United for their first-ever win at Old Trafford, thanks to Wilfried Bony’s 90th-minute goal:

There were more brilliant moments on Saturday.

Minnows Rochdale moved into the Fourth Round of the competition for the first time in eleven years after upsetting Leeds United. The League Two minnows held a slim 1-0 lead over Leeds before Ian Henderson sealed the win with this exquisite volley:

Elsewhere, Oliver Norwood scored a perfect free kick to help Championship side Huddersfield Town to a 3-2 win, avoiding a major upset at the hands of non-league Grimsby Town:

And in the big match of the weekend, Arsenal’s Tomas Rosicky stole the ball from Spurs defender Danny Rose at the halfway line and chipped keeper Hugo Lloris masterfully on the ensuing breakaway:

Take your pick: Champions League goal of the day

Hegeler belts beautiful free kick

Mitroglou stripes sensational shot to notch hat trick

Bulut tucks in late goal in thriller

My, what an eventful day in the Champions League. Plenty of goals to go around, but we’ve picked out what we believe are the best three. Which goal is the best of the best, though? That’s for you to decide.

Is it Jens Hegeler’s wonderfully stroked free-kick curler to give Bayer Leverkusen all three points in the closing seconds against Real Sociedad?

Perhaps it’s Olympiakos forward Kostas Mitroglou long-range bullet to seal his hat trick, and the win, against Anderlecht?

Or does Umut Bulut’s equalizer for Galatasaray vs. Juventus to claw out a draw steal the show?

Choose for yourselves!

When your team is already up 4-0, might as well try something crazy.

With his Deportivo Quito side already up four goals in the second half, Alex Colon unleashed from almost midfield and his strike rocketed off the inside of the crossbar and in for the goal of the week, if not month.

And yes, it’s the same team that brought us last week’s incredible goal. Deportivo seems like a fun team to play for, don’t they?

Chelsea fans, keep your eye on this kid.

Blues prospect Nathaniel Chalobah, who is on loan with Watford this season, scored this thunderous blast from about 30 yards out against Leicester. He hit it so hard, you can barely see the ball as it rockets into the net. My goodness!

It was an important goal, too. Chalobah’s strike was the difference in the game, keeping third-placed Watford’s hopes alive for automatic promotion to the Premier League. Had the Hornets lost, second-placed Hull City could have clinched promotion.

One last thing: Chalobah is only 18.

Messi puts on a show as Barcelona crushes Milan

Lionel Messi took matters into his own hands, er…feet, as Barcelona came back from a 0-2 deficit from the first leg to crush Milan 4-0 en route to the Champions League quarterfinals.

Messi’s opener in the 5th minute was an absolute stunner and set the tone for the rest of the match. Watch as he curls one perfectly into the top corner while surrounded by FOUR Milan defenders. It also happened to be Messi’s second-fastest goal he ever scored in the Champions League!

Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse wowed us last year with that beautiful volley against Chelsea, a goal many said was the season’s best.

Today, Cisse was up to his old tricks and scored a wonderful goal against Southampton: a thunderous dipping volley off one bounce, about 30 yards away. Now that’s certainly the goal of the weekend (with apologies to Rafael) and a Goal of the Month Nominee! #GOMonFOX
