On the bright side…

image

Talk about looking through rose-colored glasses.

After suffering an embarrassing 7-0 aggregate loss in the Champions League semifinals to FC Bayern Munich, Barcelona is looking on the bright side.

One of the top stories on the club’s official website yesterday was headlined: “Barca rule Champions League possession.”

The story starts by noting that Barcelona led the competition in possession and passes this season, which, quite obviously, didn’t translate to the one stat that truly matters: goals.
If you learned one thing this week, let it be this: possession isn’t everything.

We’re not sure what’s better here: Lionel Messi’s magical goal, or Ray Hudson’s over-the-top call.

When Messi entered the match in the 59th minute, Barcelona was behind 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao. The little genius sparked a comeback when he scored the goal seen above to equalize. Then he assisted on Alexis Sanchez’s goal two short minutes later.

But Barcelona would blow it late, as they gave up an equalizer in the 90th minute, drawing 2-2 against Athletic Bilbao.

Barca’s title celebrations will have to wait just a little longer.

Family time for Lionel Messi

image

Lionel Messi shared a rare glimpse into his family life on Facebook, posting this photo of himself with his son Thiago and girlfriend Antonella Roccuzzo.

Since Messi won’t be traveling with Barcelona to face Real Zaragoza — an effort by Barca to rest their first-choice players ahead of a grueling end to the season — the superstar spent time relaxing by the beach with his lovely family.

One thing is certain: that kid is a spitting image of his dad already. What remains to be seen (and it’ll be a while until we know) is if Thiago got his daddy’s soccer skills along with his looks.

PSG and Barcelona fought out a 2-2 draw in their first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals, with the Parisians leveling it up on the very last shot of the game — quite dramatic of them.

Earlier, however, we saw the goal of the day courtesy of Lionel Messi and an absolute beauty of a pass by Dani Alves. Check out Alves’ ridiculous outside-of-the-boot pass and Messi’s sweet strike to finish it off.

Unfortunately for Messi and Barcelona, the greatest in the world went on to miss the second half due to a hamstring injury — ouch. Read more on that right here.

Why has Barcelona been so good? A lot of it has to do with its soccer academy, La Masia. The school has elevated notable talents into the senior side for a while now (Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Fabregas, Pique all went there just to name a few) and it looks like the current youth teams are full of promise as usual!

It took literally just 5 seconds for this little Barca munchkin to score in a recent Under-9 game!!

See ya in 10 years, kid!

Messi puts on a show as Barcelona crushes Milan

Lionel Messi took matters into his own hands, er…feet, as Barcelona came back from a 0-2 deficit from the first leg to crush Milan 4-0 en route to the Champions League quarterfinals.

Messi’s opener in the 5th minute was an absolute stunner and set the tone for the rest of the match. Watch as he curls one perfectly into the top corner while surrounded by FOUR Milan defenders. It also happened to be Messi’s second-fastest goal he ever scored in the Champions League!

It isn’t often you get to see the best players in the world show their caring, family side.

This video shows a blind child on a visit to see the Barcelona players training ground. He gets more than he bargained for, meeting the likes of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Carles Puyol. To the Barca players’ surprise, the boy can identify most of them from just touch. Extraordinary!!
