Ajax’s Jasper Cillessen steals teammate’s thunder with diving header in training

Sometimes, the planets align and something truly serendipitous happens … right when you least expect it.

Take this clip from Ajax training, where Anwar El Ghazi is taped accepting the club’s award for August’s goal of the month.

What happens in the background is a classic case of thunder-stealing. For those unfamiliar:

Yep, that’s Ajax goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen flying through the air to nail a sublime diving header. A keeper! Perhaps he was just trying to throw his hat into the ring for September’s goal of the month award.

Ajax manager, players pranked by Adidas over new kits

The Dutch just might be the most gullible people in the world. At least, that’s the conclusion you would have to draw after watching this video.

Ajax sponsor Adidas and the club’s marketing director Edwin van der Sar decided to pull a prank on manager Frank de Boer and several of his players by pretending to consult them on their new kits for next season. But instead of the actual jerseys, a hired actor presented them with truly absurd spoof kits.

image

Ajax’s classic home shirt with the bold red stripe in the middle suddenly featured ‘typical Dutch imagery’ such as tulips or bicycles, while away kits ranged from a tie-dye version to T-shirt tuxedos and those large animal face tees you might see on kindergartners.

The fake kits are so laughably awful that it makes de Boer and his players look even more preposterous for falling for it. At one point, the befuddled coach tells van der Sar, “I have a feeling we won’t be taken seriously.”

image

Now, it’s us who can’t take you seriously, Frank.

Giant animal face jerseys? Come on! If that’s not a dead giveaway you’re being “punk’d” then nothing is. Shame on everyone involved.

This is one of the coolest looks at championship celebrations you’ll ever see

Ajax secured their 33rd Eredivisie title on Sunday, making it four straight triumphs for the Dutch club. That’s more than any other team in the Dutch league.

But just because they’ve made a habit of winning the league over and over again, they still celebrate like it’s the first time. Thanks to defensive star Daley Blind, we got a a behind the scenes look at their most recent title celebrations.

As expected, there’s cheering, dancing and a LOT of drinking.

Drink up, fellas. You deserve it.

Jonathan Soriano, Ricardo Quaresma score ridiculous golazos

Austria’s Salzburg delivered athe most stunning Europa League result on Thursday night, defeating Dutch champions Ajax 3-0 in Amsterdam. One of Salzburg’s many heroes on their historic night: Jonathan Soriano.

The 28-year-old Spanish striker scored a spectacular goal from the halfway line which caught Ajax goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen off guard. As a result, Soriano’s thunderous boom puts Salzburg in the driver’s seat in their two-legged Round of 32 affair.

Not to be outdone, Porto’s Ricardo Quaresma — once touted as Portugal’s next prodigy — reminded everyone why he earned stints (albeit very short stays) with Inter Milan and Chelsea through his mediocre career.

The former Barcelona flameout whipped a curling strike in off the far post from 20 yards out after beating Eintracht Frankfurt right back Sebastian Jung on the wing.

The goal was not enough, as Eintracht Frankfurt came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Porto. Quaresma’s curler, though, was truly mesmerizing:

Ajax training facility collapses minutes after evacuation

imageImage: Ajax.nl

Mother Nature 1, Ajax 0.

A massive storm with hurricane-force gusts hit the UK and mainland Europe on Monday, and in light of the tough conditions, Dutch side Ajax  thought it’d be wise to hold practice in their indoor facility - an inflatable dome.

Alas, it wasn’t enough to hold out the storm.

While preparing for Tuesday’s Dutch Cup match against ASWH, the team realized that the wind outside was getting stronger and stronger, concerning manager Frank de Boer so much that he decided to relocate training back to the outdoor fields as a safety precaution.

What a great call that turned out to be, because mere minutes later, Ajax’s inflatable dome collapsed to the ground under the pressure of the heavy storm. Thanks to expert forecaster de Boer, nobody was in the vicinity when the incident took place and there were no injuries. The club’s website later showed some footage of the collapse:

And here’s the before picture:
