World Cup 2014 Final: Reactions to Germany’s fourth title

July 13th, 2014

Germany won a thrilling World Cup final against Argentina with a late goal in extra time, becoming the first European country to win it in the Americas. It was a fitting end to a wonderful tournament, with more late drama giving way to one final moment of individual brilliance, this time coming off the boot of Mario Goetze.

Relive this great match in our very last World Cup social recap:

A shock just minutes before the game: Germany’s Sami Khedira couldn’t go after suffering a calf injury in warmups. On came Christoph Kramer for only his second international start. In a World Cup final. No big deal.

Gonzalo Higuain wasted the first huge chance of the game. Wide open with only Manuel Neuer to beat, Higuain woefully sent his effort wide of the post. He’ll come to rue that one.

Things looked even worse for Germany when Kramer had to come off over fears of a concussion. Of course, it being a FIFA event, Kramer was initially allowed to continue before it became clear he couldn’t play.

Just before halftime, Benedikt Hoewedes hit the post with a header off a Germany corner kick.Β

The second half was more physical than the first, but the wastefulness in front of goal remained.

Just before the end of regulation, a nice moment for Miroslav Klose. The all-time leader in World Cup goals receives a standing ovation after getting subbed off one last time. On came … Mario Goetze!image

FULL TIME! For a third straight World Cup final, we were headed to extra time.

In the first extra time, Argentina’s Rodrigo Palacio had the golden chance, but his chip over Manuel Neuer went wide of the post.

To the second half of extra time we went, a penalty shootout looked an inevitability. But then, substitute Goetze unleashed took an Andre Schurrle cross of his chest and volleyed home past Sergio Romero. A goal worthy of a World Cup winner!

Minutes later, the referee blew the whistle for full time. Germany are World Cup champions for a fourth time!
