BARCELONA — With the help of hometown hero Andres Iniesta, Nike lifted the lid on the radical new design in Barcelona unveiling their latest addition to its Flynit technology family: the Magista Football boot.
The Magista features a Dynamic Fit collar that rises past the ankle, an almost sock-like feature. “With Magista, we’ve designed a shoe that feels like an extension of the player’s body. This isn’t a boot that just goes on your foot, it’s a boot that works with your foot,” Nike’s VP of Sport Performance Footwear Phil McCartney said during Thursday’s event. “By eliminating distractions, players are free to unlock their potential and creativity.”
Barcelona’s star midfielder was equally impressed as well.
"I don’t think about it when I’m wearing it,” Iniesta added. “The main difference with this boot versus boots from the past is that this literally fits like a glove.”
McCartney said Iniesta, along with Bayern Munich star Mario Goetze, played an instrumental part in developing the boot, and that the feedback provided by the players was the starting point for the boot’s overall requirements.
"Our aim at Nike has always been to meet the athlete’s particular performance demands and amplify his unique set of skills,” added Nike CEO and President Mark Parker. “Magista inherits that transformative history of design and innovation and supercharges it."
During the presentation, Nike made it clear that its designers focused on three key areas for the modern playmaker: fit, touch and traction. To aid those three areas, Nike’s design team developed what they call a unique application of NIKESKIN placed over the top of the Flyknit technology. That special layer is less than 0.1mm thick and is melted right onto the Flyknit material to help protect the player from the elements.
According to McCartney, the Magista has been four years in the making. It’s arrival ahead of the 2014 World Cup means the company will be hoping for a big impact on the pitch, a point not lost on Iniesta.
"I have been very pleased with the whole process and hope to create great memories in them,” the former World Cup winner was quick to reply. “With them, football will never be the same.”
