Borussia Dortmund fans all over the world have launched a massive social media campaign urging the club to bring back Shinji Kagawa from Manchester United.
The campaign, which has adopted the #FreeShinji hashtag on twitter, has been trending all morning in Germany in anticipation of a global Twitter flash mob set for 19:09 Central European Time (10:09am ET for U.S. readers), which of course is an honor to Dortmund’s founding in 1909. The hashtag has been trending in Manchester as well.
Kagawa, who has been unsuccessful in carving out a regular first team place with the Premier League champions (22 starts in all competitions last season), has been linked with a return to Dortmund all summer long. Jurgen Klopp had even confirmed he’s spoken with his former star pupil about a return to Dortmund, though he conceded it wasn’t going to happen as Kagawa eagerly wants to “prove himself” at United.
Still, fans of the electric winger, who was so integral to Dortmund’s back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, are fed up with how little Manchester United have used him. Kagawa has not featured in United’s opening two matches this season, and Dortmund fans clearly have noticed:
