It was only a matter of time, wasn’t it? Nine years after former college football star and NFL burnout Jesse Palmer became the first professional athlete to go on The Bachelor, we now have the ‘other’ type of football jock joining the cult TV dating show.
Meet Juan Pablo Galavis, a former Venezuelan soccer pro who last had a stint with the USL’s now defunct Miami FC franchise. Galavis, 32, quit the game in 2009 after the birth of his daughter Camila, who is now four years old.
A single parent with a golden heart and a nose for goal, who wouldn’t fall in love with that?
It’s official: Juan Pablo is our next Bachelor! pic.twitter.com/eyEfrVT2wt— The Bachelor (@BachelorABC)
The show picked Galavis after he crashed and burned on the latest season of The Bachelorette. He hopes that this time around in the hot seat, the show can provide him with the love of his life and a mother for his child.
But be warned, Juan Pablo, there are a few things you need to desperately prepare for, not the least of which are date ideas. The show is notorious for its array of outrageously exclusive dates, and you, JP, you better deliver. Luckily, we’ve got some ideas:
Group date: Of course, Bachelor and Bachelorette fans will recall that Juan Pablo was part of Desiree Hartsock’s group soccer date on the field of Espanyol. At the risk of looking repetitive, it should only be natural that futbol will make its way into this season as well. For a little twist, have your ladies split into two teams and pair them up with little kids. Play a game to three with just one rule: The children must score the goals. That way, you can test their soccer know-how and parenting skills at the same time.
2-on-1 date: Let’s be honest, the 2-on-1 is historically just a toss-away night. It’s always between two people who the Bachelor or Bachelorette was always going to send home at some point anyway. So what better way to decide the grueling 2-on-1 date with a classic, gut-wrenching penalty shootout? Juan Pablo, you will play the role of goalkeeper, the winner gets to stay for a game of soccer karaoke or something to that effect, while the loser, well, she’ll
never walk alone.
Final 1-on-1 date: This is where it gets really romantic, Juan Pablo. You’ve gotta pull out all the stops for this one. Since the show will be filming around Christmas, we suggest a Boxing Day trip to beautiful London to take in a full Premier League experience. Follow up a lovely Christmas Day dinner in England’s capital by attending the Chelsea vs Swansea game (Swans are romantic right?) from Jose Mourinho’s private box. Then, make her feel like the only “Special One” in the stadium with a special kiss at halftime on the field.
