Welp, looks like we won’t continue to see “Wondowlowski” in the Gold Cup after all.
Just one day after Chris Wondolowski scored a hat trick while wearing a misspelled jersey — and claiming that he would “rock that the whole tournament” — uber-fan Drew Carey bought the rare item from the US striker for $5,000. The money will go to two charities of Wondolowski’s choice.
Carey said of his purchase:
I was as amused as anyone to see Chris What’s-his-name name spelled incorrectly on the back of his jersey while he scored a hat trick for the National Team against Belize in the Gold Cup. Thought it would make a great souvenir.
"Wondo," ever the good sport, was a little sad to see his good-luck charm go, but happy to see the exchange with Carey benefit a good cause. He pledged to give $2,500 each to the Nike N7 and Soccer Streets USA foundations.
“I’m grateful to Drew for the generous donation,” said Wondolowski.” It was a very special night for me and the team. I really wanted to keep the jersey, but in the end it turns out the price is right.”
